Web Sites for Non-Profits

We are happy to announce that FamilyNet has agreed to to co-locate a server for HelpingTulsa for free, which will enable us to offer free websites for the same schools, churches, and non-profit organizations that we provide refurbished computers to.

FamilyNet provides family safe internet access for the Tulsa area and content for the world wide web. They provide a variety of services including filtered internet access, web-hosting solutions, electronic commerce, web application development, internet, intranet, and extranet consulting services, and we are proud to endorse the services of this Christian company. As their mission statement says:

The internet is a fantastic medium of communication and research. It can be a valuable resource for electronic mail communication, Bible study, research, news and education. Despite the wonderful potential of the internet, there are many snares and dangers lurking online. Because of the sheer power and freedom of the internet it is much easier to bring the good and the bad instantly before your eyes. Pornography, sexual explicit text, vile and lewd acts are not only able to be celebrated on the internet, they are readily accessible from your home computer with no more effort than a click of a mouse button. This convenience can make this medium a slippery slope into a pattern of devastating sin.

In Psalms 101:3 the psalmist says, "I will set nothing wicked before my eyes." It is so easy for this very visual medium to entertain and feed our depravity and cause us to think on things that are not pure (Phil 4:8). It is important to monitor this medium (internet) and not fall asleep at the wheel while others or ourselves are being dragged into this den (1 Thes. 5:6).

Internet pornography is deceptive and pervasive. Those who are publishing this material will use any means possible to "push" their addictive sin on new users. With simple typing mistakes you can easily stumble upon a pornographic site. Innocent fingers can easily type a cartoon character’s name and be transported to a lewd solicitation service. Internet advertisements for things like "kids camps" can be links to child pornography sites (I found such a link on a very active search engine).

FamilyNet, Inc. was invisioned and formed because the founders had a burden to create a family-safe internet service. They wanted to give users (families, schools and businesses) the ability to surf the web without stumbling on to bad sites. Their goal was to provide a service just as good as the rest with no additional software or hardware but with one major distinction: the ability to block known bad sites. Thankfully, their goal was realized.

Using the latest packet filtering technologies, FamilyNet, Inc. is able to transparently screen out known bad sites. The database of these bad sites is constantly being updated and reviewed by a non-denominational internet policing agency. This database blocks sites that contain violence, profanity, partial nudity, full nudity, sexual acts, gross depictions, satanic, militant extremist and questionable or illegal gambling.

FamilyNet, Inc. is committed to helping build a safer more family-friendly internet. By providing filtered internet access for the whole family, they are building a front line fence to help shield the user from the bad.

It may take a couple of weeks for us to get everything set up, but when we are ready we will post another news item announcing the availability of the service.
